This beautifully
hand coloured original antique map of North & Central
America - including Texas & the SW, Gulf of Mexico, California, Louisiana, Florida & the Colonial
United States - by Robert Du Vaugondy, was published by
Charles Francois Delamarche in 1796.
Fine map focusing on the Gulf of Mexico and the
Caribbean but also including the southern part of North
America through Central America and the northern part of
South America. Detail is mostly confined to the Spanish
possessions with a number of early missions and
settlements named in Nouveau Mexique including
Cenis in today's Texas. An interesting portrayal of
Florida shows the tip consisting of several large
islands. Within the colonial states are shown the towns
of Savannah, Charleston, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Capes
May, Henri, Hatteras, Fear and Carteret. The
title appears within a decorative rococo-style cartouche
at upper center and an inset map of the Azores to the
right. (Ref: Tooley; M&B)
