This very large and beautifully hand
coloured map of the northern Arctic regions from the west coast of Ireland to
Hudson and Baffins Bay in Canada - showing the whole of Greenland and Iceland -
was published by Pierre Mortier in his 1693 edition of
Neptune Francois' sea-atlas.
This map shows the Canadian arctic as it was known at the end of the 17th
century. A large and decorative chart showing from the west coast of Ireland,
Iceland, Greenland and the bays of Arctic America. The abundance of English
placenames is a testament to their efforts to find the North West Passage, thus
reaching the east without having to pass the French and Spaniards! Published in
Mortier's issue of Jaillot's 'Atlas Nouveau', it also appeared in Mortier's
'Neptune Francois' sea-atlas. (Ref: Tooley; M&B)
