This beautifully
hand coloured original antique map
of Holland & the Low Countries was published by Abraham
Ortelius in the rare 1606 English edition of Theatrum
Orbis Terrarum.
Ortelius marvels in the text on the back of the map - in
English..... on such a small country produces such
prodigious amounts of milk and of cheese....the text
goes further into the extensive attributes of the Dutch
peoples and the countries achievements.
The map was
drawn by Jacob van
Deventer in ca 1550 and
was one of the few maps that was present in every
edition of the Ortelius Atlas with 7300 printed between
1570 and 1641. Between these dates Ortelius published 31
editions of his atlas in Latin, Dutch, German, French,
Spanish, Italian but only one English edition published,
in 1606.
For the first time, in
1570, all the elements of the modern Atlas were brought
to publication in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis
Terrarum. This substantial undertaking assembled
fifty-three of the best available maps of the world by
the most renowned and up to date geographers.
Unlike earlier compositions, such as the Italian
composite or "Lafreri" Atlases, each of Ortelius' maps
was engraved specifically for his Atlas according to
uniform format. Through its launching, pre-eminence in
map publishing was transferred from Italy to the
Netherlands, leading to over a hundred years of Dutch
supremacy in all facts of cartographical production. (Ref: Van Den Broecke; Tooley)
