Title : Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis interjacentiumq regionum Nova Descripto.

Size : 22 1/2in x 19 1/4in (570mm x 485mm)
Description :

This fine beautifully hand coloured original antique map of the East Coast of America from Chesapeake Bay, Virginia to the Carolina's Georgia & Northern Florida was published in the 1639 French edition of Mercators Atlas by Jan Jansson and Henricus Hondius.

Background:
This map, extending from Chesapeake Bay in Virginia to Northern Florida, appeared first in Joan Blaeu's Atlas in 1638 and in Jansson's Atlas from 1639. Making this map a 1st Jansson edition.
It was based on a map of the region published in 1606 by Joducus Hondius after the surveys by the Englishman John White in 1590 and the Frenchman Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues in 1564-1565, with the respective areas of English and French colonisation of the East Coast of America indicated by the English Coast of Arms in Virginia and the French Coat of Arms south of Virginia.
The map shows a region at the southern end of the Appalachians where Gold and Silver was mined: "Apalatcy montes in quibus aes aurum et argentum invenitur" referring to the 16th century accounts of panning for these metals in the rivers of the region by the Indians.
Although the map is based on an older model, it was attempted to incorporate some recent geographical information, such as a settlement established in 1621 by Irish planters led by one Daniel Gookin, at Newport News on the north shores of Chesapeake Bay and also Jamestown farther upstream on the James River (marked on the map as Powhatan flu.)  The general outline of the Carolina coast on this map is another improvement on the earlier map, being shown here with two large cuspid bays which are now called Onslow Bay and long Bay.
This map is almost identical to the Blaeu map which was published in the previous year in 1638. (Ref Tooley M&B)
