This fine incredibly detailed rare and important original antique folding map showing many discoveries of New South Wales and more importantly Victoria or Port Philip by John Arrowsmith was published for the Royal Geographical Society by John Murray in 1832, dated at the foot of the map. 

Extremely detailed map of expeditions of discovery into the interior of western & southern SE Australia. Expeditions noted are the 1818 expedition of Oxley to the latest 1828 & 29 expeditions of Charles Sturt. Others include the 1823 expedition of Lieutenant Currie, the 1824 expedition of Hume, and the 1827, 28 & 29 expeditions of Cunningham. There is also extensive notes on the Murray Valley and River and surrounding areas as well as western & eastern Victoria. Port Philip, soon to be Melbourne settled in 1835, is noted "Extensive & beautiful Downs called Iramoo by the natives".
This map when published would have carried the latest and most up to date information regarding SE Australia and I have no doubt that this map would have been used by explorers of the 1830's including Bateman the founder of the city of Melbourne in 1835.

John Arrowsmith came from a long line of outstanding London map publishers. His maps of Australia were the best and most accurate maps published commercially in his time. He based his information on the latest accounts from explorers. (Ref: Tooley; M&B)
