Title : Carte qui represente les differentes connoissances que l on a eues des Terres Arctiques...
Date : 1773
Size : 16 1/2in x 13in (420mm x 330mm)
Description :

This finely engraved hand coloured original and important early map showing the development of the mapping of Eastern Canada and Hudson's Bay was drawn by Robert De Vaugondy in 1773 - the date is engraved in the title - for Denis Diderot (1713-84) edition of Encyclopedie.
The four views represent two views by Claude Delisle in 1700 & 1703. Another view by Nicolas Sanson in 1750 and the last view by Henry Ellis in 1747.
At the time of publication these
maps were some of the most in-depth and accurate maps published of Asia, Canada, California and the NW region of America.
Diderot's maps were intended to further an understanding of the Western Coast of America, and NE Asia, during a time period immediately prior to Cook's  voyage to the region - less than a decade later- where numerous theories abounded on the NW Coast of America. A nice dark impression of this essential map for California collectors. (Ref: Tooley; M&B)
