This beautifully
hand coloured original antique map of the Ancient Dombes
region of France - centering on the cities of Mascon &
Lyon surrounded by the Saone and Rhone Rivers -
was published in the 1607 Latin edition of Mercators Atlas published by Henricus Hondius and Jan
Jansson.
Dombes is
an historic region of east-south-eastern France, once an
independent municipality, formerly part of the province
of Burgundy, and now a district comprised in the
département of Ain, and bounded W. by the Saône
River, by the Rhône, E. by the Ain and N. by the
district of Bresse.
After the sale of
Mercator's plates to in 1605,
Hondius continued to publish the original plates with
little alteration until 1630 when along with Jansson
many of the original plates were altered or re-engraved either decoratively or topographically or both. This map
is from one of the last unaltered editions of Mercator's
atlas. (Ref: Koeman, Tooley)
