This
fine hand coloured original antique
print of an Aboriginal from Botany Bay, New South Wales,
by John Chapman & Johan Eberhard (1727-1814) was
published in London in 1795 - dated at the foot of the
print.
This incredible original print - one of the first
detailed engravings of an original inhabitant of the
area - was published only 8 years after the arrival of
Govenor Phillip & the the First Fleet to Botany Bay, New
South Wales in 1788. Botany Bay was quickly abandoned
after they realised that the lack of fresh water and the
sandy soil made it an unsuitable place to begin a
settlement.
The first fleet moved quickly into Port Jackson where
the city of Sydney now stands.
Unlike some of the engravings of the local inhabitants
made in the 18th century this one is quite accurate and
abandons the absurd practise of giving peoples of the
southern Hemisphere European features. (Ref:
